If you came here after reading a couple of super lengthy articles on CRO (Conversion Rate Optimization) but still confused how to exactly implement it, you have arrived at the right place. This article is short...er but gives you a practical guide to implement CRO for yourself.
 
## What is CRO anyways?
CRO (Conversion Rate Optimization) sounds like a scary word only to be used in a science lab but it is really a simple concept. Let's break it down word-by-word.

Every business wants their customer to perform an "event of value" when they visit their store or website and if the customer does it, that is a **conversion**. The "event of value" differs for business types and scenarios. A baker wants their shop visitors to buy some bread to maker her revenue. An insurance company wants its website visitors to submit their contact information and insurance requirements to capture & qualify leads. We, at Heyflow, want you to build more clickflows because that is how we capture value (Hint: Check out our pricing page).

**Conversion Rate** is the percentage of your total visitors that convert.

**Why does it matter though?**
Let's say Company A's website has 20,000 conversions per day where as Company B's website gets merely 200 conversions per day. Clearly, Company A knows what they are doing, right? Errr...kinda.

Let me give you another piece of data now. Company A has 1,000,000 visitors per day (CR = 20000/1000000 = 2%) where as Company B has 1000 visitors per day (CR = 200/1000 = 20%). Now, you can see that Company B gets more bang for the buck.

**Conversion Rate Optimization** is the strategy of getting that more bang for the buck by converting more of the visitors you already have instead of trying to get more new users through Ads (low click through rate) or SEO (takes a lifetime of great content writing).
 
## How to Cha Cha... I mean CRO
(but you will Cha Cha once you are done). 
Let's get to the meat of how to exactly do CRO for yourself before you go "Agh! Another blog post of CRO theories". Let's go step-by-step.
 
### Step #1: Define your "event of value"
Some common types of "events of value" are:
1. Submit requirements (Eg: Needs to rent an SUV for 6 people)
2. Submit preferences (Eg: Prefers a petrol car over diesel for rent)
3. Submit contact information (Eg: Phone number to call to discuss requirements)
4. Sign up for trial
5. Purchase a product (Eg: Bought a painting)

There are many more but you get the idea. One thing to remember is that there can be and mostly will be multiple "events of value" in your customer's journey that you are trying to convert them on. At the same time, you may need the customer to submit their requirements, preferences and contact information. Customers might not be open to share so much at a go and that is why at Heyflow, we allow you to [add multiple Submit buttons](https://www.heyflow.help/en/articles/5454218-submit) in your clickflows. Everytime the customer submits some information, you get their response even if they didn't get to the end of the clickflow.
 
### Step #2: Define a goal & timeline
They say "It's about the journey, not the destination...unless your revenue depends on it". You need to know where you are trying to get to (your goal) and by when you will get there (timeline). But why? Because that will help you decide how much business focus and resources you want to dedicate to this. Do you have investors breathing on your neck because you rarely convert a visitor and you want to raise another round next month? Go aggressive on CRO. Set up a large achievable goal and a shorter timeline. Do you acquire a decent number of customers per month at a low CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost) but most of your existing customers are churning. Focus on retention and maybe experiment with CRO a bit. Aim for a decent CR increase with a longer timeline. CRO is amazing but not the silver bullet to solve all your business problems regardless of what your CRO consultants tell you. 
 
### Step #3: Set up instrumentation to measure conversions
Setting up Analytics to measure your conversions can be tricky and generally needs a Business Intelligence Analyst and a Data Engineer to help out. However, quite often we tend to overengineer our Analytics setup leading to this pain.

If you need a simple out-of-the-box setup, you can just connect to Google Analytics and get a lot of Analytics automatically tracked. However, you would need to setup custom tracking for your goal. If you are using a Heyflow, then this is a piece of cake because you just need to turn ON the Google Analytics integration and then you can choose to send any button click event to Google Analytics by just turning ON a toggle..

For a more complex setup, we recommend using a Customer Data Platform like [Segment](https://segment.com/) or a [Tag Manager](https://tagmanager.google.com/) like Google Tag Manager (Heyflow has [an integration](https://www.heyflow.help/en/articles/5508021-google-tag-manager-setup) for this as well) that allow you to send complex user identification and tracking data to multiple analytics tools like [Heap](https://heap.io/) (we personally use it because it autocaptures most user interaction data), [Amplitude](https://www.amplitude.com/) (best for experimentation & building complex dashboards), [Mixpanel](https://mixpanel.com/) (great UX, strong predictive analytics & has notification features). If you are using Google Tag Manager, Heyflow exposes a bunch of [clickflow events](https://www.heyflow.help/en/articles/5508671-events) in the DataLayer [even if the flow is embedded in your website](https://www.heyflow.help/en/articles/5508743-parent-window-event). 

Finally, if your conversions are submission on Heyflow, then you don't need to do anything I said above and just head over to our Analytics Dashboard which reports your conversion rate, visits, submissions, time to complete, breakdown of visits, per screen drop off (more about this in the next step) and much more in the making.
 
### Step #4: Find where the funnel leaks
You are now tracking conversions and you look at how your conversion rate is progressing and you know something could be better. But what?

When your visitors are journeying towards conversion, they are flowing through a funnel. A sample funnel of an insurance agency trying to source leads looks like the following:

Funnels can be leaky, which in non-marketing lingo means that visitors can get disappointed/bored/find things irrelevant at any point of your journey and decide to not continue or "drop off" if we are speaking marketing lingo again ("opdray offyay" for people who prefer Pig Latin). Therefore, you will need to figure out where users are dropping off and why.

If you have already setup a strong analytics system in the step above, make sure that you are tracking all your funnel events. Then, build a funnel report that tells you what percentage of your users dropped off at each funnel event. Google Analytics builds it by default for page views. Most popular Analytics tools come with funnel reports as well but setting them up might take a bit of effort. If you are using Heyflow for your conversions, then each screen acts as a funnel. As mentioned above, our Analytics Dashboard tracks drop off rate (percentage of users that exit the clickflow at a particular screen after viewing it) out-of-the box.
 
### Step #5: Fix the leaks
We know where the problem exactly lies now but how do we fix it? Let's tackle a few common reasons for funnel leaks
1. **Bad Targeting:** If your drop offs are high at the top of the funnel, it might be that you are attracting the wrong customers. This might be a good time to re-evaluate & A/B test your targeting and see how they affect the top of the funnel drop offs.

2. **Not knowing what to do/say:** If customers are spending a lot of time moving around a particular part of your funnel but not doing much and eventually dropping off, they are probably confused about what to do in the product/website or say as an answer to a question you asked. Screen recording tools like [Fullstory](https://www.fullstory.com/) help you figure this out really well. Customer education is key at this point. Make sure your copy is clear & actionable, there are hints all around on what to do, help content is rendered in context or not more than a click away and customer support is accessible and responsive. The best way to solve it is [design affordance](https://www.interaction-design.org/literature/topics/affordances) which leads a user to understand what to do just by looking at the design without any extra help. If you are using Heyflow, you can build affordance using placeholders, icons, decorators, masks and many more carefully crafted design settings.

3. **Lack of trust:** Sometimes we ask customers to share sensitive and personal information or push them directly to buy something before building enough trust. Let customers know how you secure their data, how you comply with privacy laws, how you secure their transactions and show some proof of your reputation. [Shoutout.so](https://shoutout.so/) is a great tool to show social testimonials. In Heyflow, you can even [choose if a field is asking for sensitive information](https://www.heyflow.help/en/articles/5508785-all-edit-options#h_1db9f384d0) and that information will not be stored in Heyflow's databases.

4. **Fastest path to value:** Sometimes you would see distributed drop offs at every point and unable to pin-point the reason. Such a behavior can point to one of the largest reasons for users to drop off, that is, users don't see the value in continuing. The distributed behavior happens because different people have different patience levels. Some are ready to wait more than others to realize the value in your offering and some vice-versa. However, the point is that you need to ensure that:

 4.1. Your value proposition is clear and relevant to the customer from the get-go so that they see it and say "That is exactly what I wanted". We have seen customers at Heyflow achieving this by offering to answer a visitor's burning question like helping them figure out the right insurance plan for their current requirement & qualification OR helping them price their property correctly OR helping them calculate their energy saving from solar panels. This information starts right from their clickflow's landing page augmented by the right use of headlines, subtitles, icons, pictures and avatars. Visitors are happy to give out their requirements, preferences and contact information in exchange for this help.

 4.2. Customers reach their Aha! moment as fast as possible. No one has the patience to fill 50 fields in a form or read 5 pages of help docs or jump around the product/website for half an hour to get what they want. Therefore, make sure that you guide your customers to the value they came looking for early in the journey. It is easier said than done because every customer is different and comes to you for different things you offer. At Heyflow, we do this by using variables, logic jumps and progress bars. Progress bars tell you how many screens you have to get through. Logic jumps take you only to information relevant to you. Variables customize the clickflow content based on what you said before or which campaign link you came from. 

### Step #6: Compare Results & Repeat 4 & 5
Congratulations on finishing the above 5 steps. You are now a "practical" CRO expert. All you need to do now is to compare results from each of your CRO efforts and understand what worked well and what didn't. I am going to mention Heyflow's Analytics Dashboard for the 3rd time now because it really gets the job done. You can compare the Conversion Rates and per page drop offs for any time frame on the dashboard and figure out how your efforts have changed things. Once you have done that, just repeat Step #4 and Step #5.

A practical guide to Conversion Rate Optimization

Wenn Du hierher gekommen bist, nachdem Du einige sehr lange Artikel über Conversion Rate Optimierung (CRO) gelesen hast, aber immer noch verwirrt bist, wie du zur Tat schreiten kannst, dann bist Du hier genau richtig. Dieser Artikel ist nicht kurz, aber gibt Dir einen praktischen Leitfaden, um CRO handfest in Deinem Unternehmen umzusetzen.

Was ist CRO überhaupt?
----------------------

CRO klingt wie ein furchteinflößendes Wort, das nur in einem wissenschaftlichen Kontext verwendet werden kann, aber in Wirklichkeit ist es ein einfaches Konzept: Lassen es mich Dir Wort für Wort erklären.

Jedes Unternehmen möchte, dass der Kunde beim Besuch seines Geschäfts oder seiner Website ein "wertschöpfendes Ereignis" ausführt, und wenn der Kunde dies tut, ist das eine sogenannte Konversion. Das "wertschöpfende Ereignis" unterscheidet sich je nach Industrie und Szenario. Ein Bäcker möchte, dass die Besucher seines Ladens ein Brot kaufen, um seine Einnahmen zu steigern. Eine Versicherungsgesellschaft möchte, dass ihre Website-Besucher ihre Kontaktinformationen und Versicherungsanforderungen eingeben, um Leads zu erfassen und zu qualifizieren. Wir bei Heyflow möchten, dass Du einen Clickflow erstellst, denn so schaffen wir Mehrwert (Tipp: Schau dir hierzu unsere [Preisseite](https://heyflow.app/pricing) an).

**Die Konversionsrate** ist der Prozentsatz Deiner gesamten Besucher, die konvertieren.

**Aber warum ist das wichtig?**

Nehmen wir an, die Website von Unternehmen A hat 20.000 Konversionen pro Tag, während die Website von Unternehmen B lediglich 200 Konversionen pro Tag verzeichnet. Offensichtlich weiß Unternehmen A, was es tut, oder? Naja, das stimmt nicht unbedingt.

Lass uns hier etwas tiefer einsteigen.

Nehmen wir einmal an, Unternehmen A hat 1.000.000 Besucher pro Tag und somit eine Konversionsrate von 2% (= 20000/1000000), während Unternehmen B 1000 Besucher pro Tag hat und somit eine Konversionsrate von 20% (=200/1000).

**Conversion-Rate-Optimierung** verfolgt das Ziel, mehr Konversionen bei einer gleichbleibenden Anzahl von Besuchern zu erhalten.

Wie man Cha Cha tanzt ... ich meine CRO implementiert (aber Cha Cha tanzen wir, wenn wir fertig sind)

Lass uns zu der Frage kommen, wie Du CRO mit Deinem Unternehmen umsetzt, bevor du sagst: "Ah! Ein weiterer Blogpost, der nicht ans Eingemachte geht". Lass uns Schritt für Schritt vorgehen.

### Schritt #1: Definiere Dein "Conversion Event"

Hier findest Du einige beispielhafte Conversion Events, denen wir im Rahmen unser täglichen Arbeit häufiger über den Weg laufen:

1.  Anfragen stellen (z. B.: Muss einen Geländewagen für 6 Personen mieten)
2.  Angabe von Präferenzen (z. B.: Bevorzugt ein Benzinfahrzeug gegenüber einem Dieselfahrzeug zur Miete)
3.  Übermittlung von Kontaktinformationen (z. B.: Telefonnummer zur Besprechung der Anforderungen)
4.  Für eine Probefahrt anmelden
5.  Ein Produkt kaufen (z.B.: Ein Gemälde)

Es gibt noch viel mehr, aber Du haben das Konzept verstanden. Denke daran, dass es in der Customer Journey, in der Du versuchst, Deinen Kunden zu konvertieren, mehrere "Conversion Events" geben kann und meist auch gibt.

Der Kunde wird möglicherweise seine Anforderungen, Präferenzen und Kontaktinformationen angeben. Häufig sind Kunden allerdings nicht bereit, uns so viel auf einmal mitzuteilen, weshalb wir bei Heyflow die Möglichkeit bieten, [mehrere Absenden-Buttons](http://Customers might not be open to share so much at a go and that is why at Heyflow, we allow you to add multiple Submit buttons in your clickflows) in Deine Clickflows einzufügen. Jedes Mal, wenn der Kunde Informationen eingibt, erhältst Du seine Antwort, auch wenn er nicht bis zum Ende des Flows gekommen ist.

### Schritt #2: Definiere ein Ziel und einen Zeitplan

Man sagt: "der Weg ist das Ziel" ... es sei denn, Deine Einnahmen hängen davon ab. Du musst wissen, wo Du hin möchtest (Ziel) und bis wann (Zeitplan). Warum? Weil Du dann entscheiden kannst, wie viel Aufmerksamkeit und Ressourcen Du der CRO widmen möchtest. Sitzen Dir die Investoren im Nacken, weil Du kaum Besucher konvertierst, und Du willst nächsten Monat eine weitere Finanzierungsrunde durchlaufen? Dann ergibt es Sinn, beim CRO aggressiver vorzugehen. Setze Dir ein großes, erreichbares Ziel und einen kurzen Zeitrahmen.

Akquirierst Du eine anständige Anzahl von Kunden pro Monat zu niedrigen CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost), aber die meisten Deiner bestehenden Kunden wechseln? Konzentriere Dich lieber auf die Kundenbindung und experimentiere vielleicht ein wenig mit CRO. Strebe eine anständige Konversionsraten-Steigerung mit einem langfristigeren Zeitplan an. CRO ist sehr effektiv, aber kein Allheilmittel, um alle Deine Probleme zu lösen, unabhängig davon, was Dir Deine CRO-Berater erzählen.

### Schritt #3: Einrichten von Instrumenten zur Messung von Conversions

Die Einrichtung von Analysewerkzeugen zur Messung Deiner Conversions kann schwierig sein und erfordert in der Regel die Hilfe eines Business Intelligence Analysten und eines Data Engineers. Das liegt daran, dass viele Menschen in dieser Situation dazu neigen, den Analyseprozess zu sehr zu technisieren.

Wenn Du ein einfaches, sofort einsatzbereites Setup benötigst, kannst einfach eine Verbindung zu Google Analytics herstellen und einen Großteil der erhobenen Daten automatisch verfolgen lassen. Dafür musst Du jedoch ein benutzerdefiniertes Tracking für Dein Ziel einrichten. Wenn Du Heyflow verwendest, ist dies ein Kinderspiel, denn Du musst nur die Google Analytics-Integration einschalten und kannst dann jedes Button-Klick-Ereignis an Google Analytics senden, einfach indem du einen Button aktivierst.

Für ein komplexeres Setup empfehlen wir die Verwendung einer Kundendatenplattform wie [Segment](https://segment.com/) oder eines Tag Managers wie [Google Tag Manager](https://tagmanager.google.com) (Heyflow hat auch hierfür eine [Integration](https://www.heyflow.help/de/articles/5508021-google-tag-manager-einrichtung)), die es Dir ermöglicht, komplexe Benutzeridentifikations- und Tracking-Daten an mehrere Analysetools wie [Heap](https://heap.io) (wir persönlich verwenden es, weil es die meisten Benutzerinteraktionsdaten automatisch erfasst), [Amplitude](https://amplitude.com) (am besten für Experimente und die Erstellung komplexer Dashboards), [Mixpanel](https://mixpanel.com) (großartige UX, starke prädiktive Analysen und Benachrichtigungsfunktionen) zu senden. Wenn Du Google Tag Manager verwendest, stellt Heyflow eine Reihe von [Clickflow-Ev](https://www.heyflow.help/de/articles/5508671-events)[ents](https://www.heyflow.help/de/articles/5508671-events) im DataLayer zur Verfügung, [selbst wenn der Flow in Deine Website eingebettet ist](https://www.heyflow.help/en/articles/5508743-parent-window-event).

Wenn Deine Konversionen über Heyflow übermittelt werden, brauchst Du nichts von dem, was ich oben gesagt habe, zu tun. Gehe einfach zu unserem Analytics Dashboard, das Deine Konversionsrate, Besuche, Übermittlungen, die Zeit bis zum Absenden, die Aufschlüsselung der Besuche, die Abbrüche pro Bildschirm (mehr dazu im nächsten Schritt) und vieles mehr anzeigt.

### Schritt #4: Finde heraus, wo der Funnel undicht ist

Du verfolgst jetzt die Konversionen und siehst, wie sich die Konversionsrate entwickelt, und Du weißt, dass dein Flow noch verbessert werden könnte. Aber an welcher Stelle?

Grundsätzlich durchlaufen die Besucher deines Flows auf dem Weg zur Konversion einen sogenannten Funnel. Ein Beispiel für den Funnel einer Versicherungsagentur, die versucht, Leads zu generieren, sieht folgendermaßen aus:

Funnels können undicht sein, was im Nicht-Marketing-Jargon bedeutet, dass Besucher an einem beliebigen Punkt im Flow enttäuscht/gelangweilt/irrelevant sein können und beschließen, abzubrechen. Daher musst Du herausfinden, wo die Nutzer abbrechen und warum.

Erstelle dann einen Funnelbericht, aus dem hervorgeht, wie viel Prozent Deiner Nutzer bei jedem Funnelereignis abgebrochen haben. Google Analytics erstellt diese standardmäßig für Seitenaufrufe. Die meisten gängigen Analytics-Tools verfügen ebenfalls über Funnelberichte, deren Einrichtung jedoch etwas mehr Aufwand erfordert. ### Schritt #5: Behebe die Lecks

Du weißt jetzt, wo genau das Problem liegt. Aber wie kannst Du es beheben? Lass uns ein paar häufige Gründe für Lecks im Funnel angehen

    1. Dein Mehrwert für den Kunden von Anfang an klar und verständlich ist, so dass er sich denkt: "Das ist genau das, was ich wollte".     2. Die Kunden erreichen ihren Aha! Moment so schnell wie möglich. Niemand hat die Geduld, 50 Felder in einem Formular auszufüllen, 5 Seiten Hilfstext zu lesen oder eine halbe Stunde auf dem Produkt/der Website herumzuspringen, um das zu bekommen, was er will. Stelle daher sicher, dass Du Deinen Kunden schon zu Beginn ihrer Reise Deinen Mehrwert aufzeigst. Das ist leichter gesagt als getan, denn jeder Kunde ist anders und kommt wegen anderer Dinge zu Dir, die Du anbietest. Bei Heyflow setzen wir dazu Variablen, Logiksprünge und Fortschrittsbalken ein. Fortschrittsbalken zeigen Dir an, wie viele Bildschirme Du noch durchlaufen musst. Logiksprünge führen Dich nur zu den für Dich relevanten Informationen. ## Why changing?
Finding the perfect name for your b̶a̶b̶y̶ startup is hard. It has to be unique, rememberable, easy to pronounce in many languages and somehow represent your whole idea, values and vision in one word. Tricky. When we founded this company, we believed 'Niro' ticks most of the boxes and we were very happy with it.

But of course, at that point we weren't able to anticipate the reactions to it. First, we learned that sometimes it's hard to make an audible distinction between Niro and Miro. Problematically, Miro is also an internet startup (one of the cool ones) so there was some confusion. Second, Niro is also the name of a car: Kia Niro. We knew that but didn't think that this is a problem because car and web apps are pretty far apart. But, as we learned, out-bidding a global car company on Google & co is expensive. But the last straw that forced us to abandon ship and to find a new name was multiple cease and desist letter from companies with ten times as many lawyers as we have developers.

We learned a lot about trademark rights and that, legally, Nyro, Niro, Nero, Miro – that's all pretty much the same. We also learned that the trademark classes used to distinguish between services are stuck in 1990: Have a look at [class 9](https://www.wipo.int/classifications/nice/nclpub/en/fr/?class_number=42&explanatory_) which is relevant for any European SaaS company. As you can read, "software as a service" is in the same category as "oil, gas and mining exploration services" and "architectural and urban planning services". How? Why? So even if you find a name that you like and for which a good domain is available – this could still make you start all over again.

After many hours of ideating and hundreds of names run through trademark registers we are super happy that we're now Heyflow – and we hope you're happy, too.

## Warum den Namen ändern?

Den perfekten Namen für sein b̶a̶b̶y̶ Startup zu finden, ist schwer. Er soll einzigartig, einprägsam und in vielen Sprachen leicht auszusprechen sein – und nebenbei die ganze Idee, Werte und Vision in einem Wort repräsentieren. Knifflig. Als wir dieses Unternehmen gründeten, waren wir der Meinung, dass "Niro" die meisten dieser Kriterien erfüllt und wir waren sehr glücklich damit.

Aber natürlich konnten wir zu diesem Zeitpunkt die Reaktionen darauf nicht vorhersehen. Zunächst haben wir gelernt, dass es manchmal schwer ist, Niro und Miro hörbar zu unterscheiden. Problematisch ist, dass Miro auch ein Internet-Startup ist (eines der coolen), sodass es einige Verwechslungen gab. Zweitens: Niro ist auch der Name eines Autos: Kia Niro.
